Shooting: Our New Hobby

Each year I like to learn something new. Last year it was golf, but we only played one game before we packed up the clubs and gave up. After that we turned our attention to squash. A squash racket is much cheaper to buy than a set of golf clubs. This year, we have decided to learn how to shoot. Before you go ahead and remind me… yes shooting will also be an expensive hobby to maintain. However it is something that we have always wanted to try.

It is a very long process to get a gun licence in Australia. We have to do a few courses and get police forms signed along with 2 character witnesses. We also need to train and shoot for a 12 month period and join a shooting club. Once we do get our licence we then need to maintain a certain level of shooting practice in order to keep our licence.

This is not the type of hobby that we can do once and then just forget about. It will be a hobby that we need to commit to long-term and practice and train for regularly.

I felt overwhelmed by all of the information that the boys were telling me. Shooting a gun is not as simple as aiming and firing. The type of gun you choose will have an influence on what bullets you need, which gun group you join, what equipment to buy.

My hands are very small, so the first thing that I will need to look for is a gun that I can wrap my hands around comfortably. I tried to use a revolver, but it was just too big. N had no problems. He shot 35 shots in the “A category” of the target on his first try.
