This month, my Thermomix Team and I are focusing on “health benefits of food“. Specifically foods which have healing remedies. We are learning about Ayurvedic Medicine and how food can directly influence the way that we feel.
I’m super excited about this topic so I created a Pinterest Board about healing foods. Here is a summary of the information I researched:
Tips For Healthy Eating:
- Always sit down to eat. Dont eat in front of your computer or TV or while you’re driving (oops… I’m so guilty of that!).
- Eat in a settled atmosphere and not when you’re upset.
- Don’t eat until you’re hungry.
- Don’t gulp down your food. But don’t eat too slowly either.
- Minimize raw foods as they can be much harder for the body to digest.
- Eat cooked food as it is easier for the body to digest.
- Use herbs in your cooking such as turmeric, ginger and neem to help with detoxification.
- Include a balance of tastes in every meal – there are six: sweet, salty, sour, pungent, bitter and astringent.
- Eat food according to your Dosha Type: Vata, Pitta & Kapha
- Avoid eating food and drinking at the same time. Eat first, then have a drink about 5 minutes after you complete your meal.
- Eat mindfully.
7 Healing Foods & Recipes
- Kale is a superfood and a preventative of cancer. Try kale in your salad, as a smoothie, in pesto or even as a pasta alternative.
- Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and prevents diabetes and Alzheimers. Drink Kombucha tea at night just before you go to bed to help your body heal while you sleep. In the morning start your day with turmeric in warm lemon water. You can also add turmeric to your curry or try it in your bliss balls!
- Bone Broth is good for arthritis and joint pain as it contains glucosamine. It also helps your fingernails and hair to grow long and strong. Quirky Jo has made a YouTube video about making bone broth and she has an amazing coconut chicken soup recipe which is made with bone broth.
- Coconut, particularly coconut oil can lower cholesterol and help maintain a normal thyroid function. It is also beneficial for helping the body absorb vitamins. Try switching to coconut oil in your everyday cooking, make your own coconut butter in your Thermomix.
- Ghee is clarified butter. It comes from milk and in India, milk is considered the essence of life (because milk comes from cows and the Indian culture worship cows). When you offer ghee, you are offering the fuel of life. It helps you to stay younger, it is good for the heart and good for your memory. Eating a good fat (like ghee) reduces sugar cravings, keeps you fuller for longer and it helps you to absorb the nutrients from the other foods that you eat. You can make your own ghee in you thermomix and then store it in a jar in your pantry (not the fridge) or turn it in to a massage oil.
- Coriander helps to draw heavy metals out of your body. You can use coriander in your Greek/Cypriot salads, make a pesto or add it to your curries. Coriander and Sweet Chilli Prawns are also nice on the BBQ during summer.
- Pomegranate has a long list of health benefits. It helps with fertility, lowers the risk of heart disease, protects against osteoarthritis, fights against diabetes, lowers cholesterol and prevents breast cancer. You can eat a pomegranate seeds directly from the fruit or add them to your cooking. Try a cauliflower ‘cous cous’ salad with pomegranate, make a pomegranate juice, make a pomegranate jam or try pomegranate, red wine & raspberry sorbet.
