The reason why I DID NOT call an ambulance…
My mum came over my house the morning I went into labour. I needed her to take care of my toddler while I focused on giving birth to my baby. When mum arrived she started to panic… she grabbed the phone and started dialing for the ambulance.
“No!! I don’t want an ambulance mum!! Please don’t call. Just wait for hubby to get home and we will drive to the hospital.”
I was very close to giving birth but I did not want the ambulance to come!
Here in QLD, the ambulance is required to take you to the closest hospital.
However I have my own OB and I have selected to go to the a private hospital. If we called an ambulance then my doctor would not be able to care for me, I would get a random doctor on duty and my intended birth plan would not go ahead.
I guess this post is only relevant to private patients but I think it’s important for everyone to know. You might be planning to go to the local public hospital near your home but you could go into labour on the other side of town.
Having said all of that… if it is an emergency and if you think you or your baby may be high risk then of course go ahead and call the ambulance!
